Exterior paint that performs on the Highveld doesn’t automatically perform here. In and around Mbombela and White River our walls take strong UV, real heat, heavy summer rain and long spells of humidity. Choosing for those conditions is the difference between a wall that still looks good in five years and one that’s chalking and streaked in two.
What the Lowveld does to a wall
- UV and heat fade colour and break down cheaper binders, so the paint chalks and dulls.
- Summer downpours test how well the paint sheds water and how good its adhesion really is.
- Humidity and shade encourage mould and algae, especially on south-facing and treed walls.
What to look for on the tin
- A quality exterior or “weatherguard” grade acrylic, not a budget PVA stretched outdoors.
- UV resistance and good colour retention, so the shade you choose still looks like that next summer.
- Water resistance with breathability, so rain stays out but trapped moisture can still escape.
- A fungicidal additive or mould resistance, which matters a lot on our humid, shaded walls.
- Strong adhesion and flexibility to move with the wall through hot days and cool nights.
Surface changes the answer
Plaster, face-brick, previously painted walls and fibre-cement all behave differently. New plaster needs to cure and usually needs a plaster primer. Chalky old paint needs a bonding liquid or the right primer or the new coat won’t hold. Face-brick and porous surfaces drink more paint and often need a sealer first. Tell us what you’re painting onto and we’ll steer the system, not just the tin.
Colour and heat
Deep, saturated colours look great but fade faster under our UV and hold more heat. Lighter and mid-tones generally last longer and stay truer. If you want a bold dark, choose a premium range built to hold its colour and budget for it lasting a little less time than a lighter shade would.
Timing
Paint exterior walls in the drier, milder months and aim to finish well before the summer rains. Avoid painting in the full heat of the day, when paint skins over too fast and the finish suffers.
